Final Duet

based on "Epilog", the end sequence from "Les Misérables"

Heaven. VALJEAN, dressed in white, stands downstage center, bathed in a pure white spotlight. He looks up, his arms spread out beseechingly.

VALJEAN
God on high
Hear my plea
Pity him
Set him free
Where we are
Let him be
Bring him here
Bring him now
Bring him home....

Behind VALJEAN, the gates of Heaven, center stage, are illuminated; they turn around once to show there's nothing else to them. Then a red light bathes the bars of the gate. Fog billows out, and JAVERT, his uniform coat in tatters, comes forward; he grasps the bars of the gate and looks in.

JAVERT

Valjean, what have you done?
Valjean, what is this torment?
You bring me up from Hell
To show me what I've lost!

VALJEAN stretches out his hand toward JAVERT.

VALJEAN

Come with me, Javert, your pain is ended
What is past, is past, let all be mended
God in Heaven has looked on you in mercy,
Now cast aside your fear and let me guide you to His glory
JAVERT
Again, you set me free!

VALJEAN (counterpoint)
Take my hand, Javert

JAVERT
Again, you show me kindness!

VALJEAN (counterpoint)
He is waiting for you!

JAVERT
Why won't you let me be?
I don't deserve His grace....

As the stage makes a half turn JAVERT turns away from VALJEAN so JAVERT is now facing the audience and VALJEAN is looking through the gate.

JAVERT
No, Valjean, you don't know what you ask!
I was wrong, and must accept my fate
Let me go, I've penance yet to pay --
Let me be -- if you must, pray for me --

The stage makes a quarter turn, leaving JAVERT stage left, and VALJEAN stage right.

VALJEAN
But I have, Javert, and He has answered

JAVERT (counterpoint)
I must accept His judgement

VALJEAN
And He bade me bring you to His keeping

JAVERT (counterpoint)
But I'm not worthy!

VALJEAN
You devoted your life to serving justice --

JAVERT (counterpoint)
Yes!

VALJEAN
Then serve it now; Shall not the Judge of all the Earth do right?

Long pause. VALJEAN stretches out his hand again as the doors to Heaven open. JAVERT hesitates, looks around, slicks back his hair, and then, finally, as if to say "oh, all right, if you insist" , he reaches out his hand to VALJEAN.

VALJEAN/JAVERT
Take my hand, I'll lead you/and lead me to salvation

JAVERT
I am sorry --

VALJEAN
I know, and I forgive you

Their hands clasp as the stage makes a quarter revolution; as JAVERT steps through the gate he shrugs off his tattered coat, revealing a new one. JAVERT's expression has changed, too -- for the first time, he knows joy. VALJEAN leads JAVERT through the gate and downstage toward the audience.

JAVERT
At last, I feel my burden lifting!

VALJEAN/JAVERT
Forgiveness is a grace that needn't only come from God --

as the last notes play VALJEAN and JAVERT stand side by side downstage center as the same Heavenly light that bathed VALJEAN in the beginning now illuminates them both.
